History of the Practical Brewery

Brewing Setup #1

Problems:

  • Stove lacked heat output.
  • Cooled wort by sitting kettle in sink of cold water (slow).
  • Spilled wort was hard to get out the kitchen carpet.
  • Stirring Spoon too short for 5 gal SS kettle.
  • 5 gal SS kettle too small for 5 gal batches.
  • Brewing Setup #2:

    Improvements

  • Purchased a camp stove from a flee market, now able to brew in the garage.
  • Built my all copper counter current wort chiller.
  • Purchased a long SS stirring spoon.

    Problems:

  • Heat production better, and portable, however still lacking quick boils.
  • Kettle still too small.
  • Brewing Setup #3:

    Improvements

  • Purchased a keg and converted it to a 15.5 gal kettle.

    Problems:

  • Seemed to boil even slower with the larger keg/kettle
  • Brewing Setup #4:

    Improvements

  • Purchased a cajun panfry system $39. Adapted the stand to hold the keg kettle better.
  • Purchased a 2:1 propane splitter to allow me to use both cookers at the same time. Now I bring the water to boiling while heating the extract in a seperate container to help pour it easier.
  • Built a stand to support the camp stove, keeps me from kneeling to use it.
  • Converted the keg cutout into a lid for the keg, allowing steam to escape through the old valve assembly (dip tube removed).

    Problems:

  • Still looking to start all grain brewing.
  • RIMS design going slow as I plan on building almost everything including a microprocessor driven temperature controller, with programed heating scheduals, valve switching, motor control, and automatic fluid level and rate sensors.
